Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, has emerged victorious in the U.S. presidential election, defeating his opponent Kamala Harris. His return to the White House has sparked widespread jubilation among his supporters worldwide, including in India.
Across social media, Indian fans are celebrating Trump’s win with congratulatory messages under the viral hashtag #CongratulationsSir. Interestingly, the excitement has also reached Marora, a village in Haryana, which is preparing its own celebrations in honor of Trump’s victory. This village has a unique connection to the Trump, as it has come to be known as "Trump Gram."
Why Marora is Called “Trump Village”
Marora, located in Haryana’s Mewat district, was unofficially dubbed “Trump Gram” around seven years ago in 2017. The name Marora remains official on paper. The symbolic nickname of Trump has rekindled media interest in this small Indian village following Trump’s electoral success. But why was Marora given this unusual title, and what’s the story behind it?
The Origin of “Trump Village” and the Har Ghar Shauchalay Campaign
The journey began with the government’s “Har Ghar Shauchalay” (A Toilet in Every Home) campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. This initiative aimed to end open defecation by ensuring that every household had access to a toilet, particularly to support the dignity and safety of women and girls.
However, progress in the Mewat area, which includes Marora village, was slower than hoped. In 2017, Marora was one of many villages still lacking proper sanitation facilities, with about 160 homes still without toilets. As a result, local women and girls had no choice but to go outside for sanitation needs.
During this time, Sulabh International, a social organization dedicated to sanitation improvements, visited Marora. Shocked by the conditions, the organization decided to take action. The village leaders, both past and present, expressed frustration, but Sulabh International took matters into their own hands. They began building toilets for each home in the village, enabling Marora to achieve open defecation-free status and bringing relief to its residents.
Why “Trump Village”? The Naming Story
The name “Trump Village” was given by Sulabh International, inspired by the friendship between Prime Minister Modi and then-U.S. President Donald Trump. At the time, Modi and Trump shared warm diplomatic ties, and the organization decided to celebrate this connection by renaming Marora as a gesture of goodwill.
According to media reports, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, noted that the children in Marora were familiar with Trump’s name, and when the idea of renaming the village was proposed, the villagers—both young and old—welcomed it with enthusiasm. Although the official name remains Marora, villagers continue to fondly refer to it as “Trump Village” even today.
Celebrations Begin in “Trump Village”
With Trump’s election victory, the villagers of Marora are once again in the spotlight. Their connection to the American leader has turned this modest Haryana village into a symbol of cross-continental camaraderie. As celebrations are planned in honor of Trump’s victory, Marora, or “Trump Village,” highlights the interesting and unexpected ways global events resonate with local communities.
This small village in Haryana stands as a testament to how a global leader’s influence can leave a lasting mark even in the most unlikely of places, reminding us of the power of diplomacy and the bonds between nations.
