Rajasthan: Bhajanlal Sharma govt abolishes nine districts created by previous Cong govt, what Ashok Gehlot said?

The BJP's Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan has taken several important decisions in the Cabinet meeting on Saturday.

The Cabinet has abolished nine out of the seventeen new districts created by the earlier Congress government of Ashok Gehlot. It has also been decided to abolish three newly created divisions.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel told in a press conference that the Cabinet has re-determined the districts and divisions formed during the time of the previous government. Now there will be a total of 7 divisions and 41 districts in the state.

The Ashok Gehlot government had increased the number of state's 33 districts and seven divisions to 50 districts and 10 divisions

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that the previous government had decided to create 17 new districts and 3 new divisions in the state in the last year of its tenure. The announcement of three new districts was made only a day before the code of conduct for the Assembly Elections-2023, whose notification could not even be issued.

'Previous govt formed new dists and divisions for political gain'

Patel said that the previous government formed new districts and divisions solely for political gain. In this, no important points like availability of financial resources, administrative requirement, law and order, cultural harmony etc. were taken into consideration. For the new districts, the previous government neither created necessary posts in the offices nor constructed office buildings. Budget and other facilities were also not provided.

8 new districts will remain

Patel said that to review this decision of the previous government, a cabinet sub-committee was constituted by the state government and to assist it, a high level expert committee was constituted under the chairmanship of retired IAS Dr. Lalit K. Panwar.

The BJP government has decided to abolish Jaipur Rural, Jodhpur Rural, Sanchore, Neem Ka Thana, Anupgarh, Gangapur City, Shahpura, Dudu and Kekri districts..

According to some critics, many very small districts were created, which had to be abolished.

Political revenge: Gehlot

After this decision of the BJP government, the Congress called a press conference and opposed this decision.

At the same time, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot wrote on the social media platform X, "The decision of the BJP government to abolish nine of the new districts created by our government is an example of indiscretion and mere political revenge."

Earlier, the BJP had formed a committee and sought a report on the newly created districts and divisions.

BJP says that the cabinet has taken this decision on the basis of the report.

The Ashok Gehlot government of Congress had announced new districts on 23 March 2023. Out of the seventeen new districts created in the Ashok Gehlot government, eight districts have been kept as they are.
