There has been a rapid increase in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) across the country, with new cases being reported daily. Earlier on Thursday, a death was reported from Guillain-Barre syndrome in Pune, Maharashtra. This was third death from GBS in Maharashtra.
2 die in W Bengal
Now the West Bengal Health Department has confirmed that two patients have died in the state so far. A 10-year-old child was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata and died during treatment on Sunday. The second was a 12th class student of North 24 Parganas district who died at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. According to the hospital, the student died due to septic shock and myocarditis and doctors suspect that its root disease may be Guillain-Barre syndrome.
WB Health Dept holds meeting
The Health Department of West Bengal held a meeting regarding Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). The Health Secretary and other officials attended the meeting. All government and district hospitals in the state were instructed to immediately report any case of GBS to the Health Department.
The Health Department has also directed the hospitals to ensure the availability of necessary treatments including plasma therapy, ventilation support system and intravenous immunoglobulin injection and to stock adequate infrastructure for these treatments.
Guidelines issued
The meeting was attended by experts, including neurologists from Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, Director of BC Roy Child Hospital, Head of Pediatrics Department of Kolkata Medical College and infectious disease specialist Professor Yogiraj Ray. After reviewing the situation, health officials issued guidelines to the hospitals.
