Hearing in SC today
Today, a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh will hear the petition filed by Dallewal in this regard. In this petition, the Central Government has been requested to direct the protesting farmers to implement proposals like legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops.
Earlier, the apex court had asked the central government why the government cannot say that its doors are open (for farmers) and it will consider the genuine grievances of the farmers protesting for various demands including legal guarantee of minimum support price for crops.
At the same time, the Supreme Court will also hear today a petition seeking contempt action against the officials of the Punjab government for not following the instructions issued to take Dallewal to the hospital on December 20 last year.
On December 12, 2024, Dallewal had written a letter to several religious leaders urging them to urge the central government to accept the demands of the farmers, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price for crops.
Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is the convener of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) (non-political) and he started a fast unto death on November 26, 2024. He refused medical assistance provided by the Punjab government and recently his health deteriorated a lot.
It is reported that the security forces stopped the Delhi march of farmers under the banner of United Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha on February 13, after which the farmers are currently camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana.
