Justin Trudeau Resigns as PM of Canada: What’s Next?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as the leader of the ruling Liberal Party and as Prime Minister. However, he will continue to serve as Prime Minister until a new Liberal Party leader is elected.

In a press conference on Monday morning, Trudeau expressed pride in his service as Prime Minister. He said, "We served during the pandemic, worked for a strong democracy, worked for better business. You all know that I am a fighter." He reflected on his time in office since 2015, emphasizing his efforts to protect Canada and strengthen the middle class, particularly during the pandemic.

Potential successors

Following his resignation announcement, discussions have begun regarding potential successors for the Liberal Party leadership. Among the top contenders are Toronto MP and former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, former central banker Mark Carney, Transport Minister Anita Anand, and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.

Trudeau's resignation comes amid declining popularity and increasing pressure within the Liberal Party. With elections scheduled before October this year, there are concerns that his party may face major challenges.

Trump said he would impose 25% tariff on Canadian imports

TTrudeau's problems escalated particularly after incoming President Donald Trump said he would impose 25% tariff on Canadian imports. Trudeau recently met with Trump, who made light of the situation, referring to Canada as potentially becoming the 51st state. Given that 75% of Canada's exports go to the U.S., such tariffs would have a devastating impact on the Canadian economy.

Relatuions with India

Additionally, Trudeau's relations with India have soured, particularly following allegations involving the murder of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved, which India has denied, leading to a diplomatic rift between the two nations. The ongoing tensions, alongside concerns about Trudeau's handling of domestic issues, have contributed to his declining approval ratings.

The resignation has sparked speculation in Indian media, suggesting that the deterioration of relations with India may have influenced Trudeau's decision to step down. The Indian government has criticized Trudeau for being lenient towards Khalistani separatists, citing concerns over vote bank politics, particularly among the Sikh community, which constitutes 2.1% of Canada's population.

A shift in Canada's foreign policy

Trudeau's departure may indicate a potential shift in Canada's foreign policy, especially regarding its relationship with India. A key question is whether the Liberal Party will choose a new leader who maintains Trudeau's critical approach or if a new government will pursue a different diplomatic strategy.

If the Liberals remain in power, the next leader will likely need to navigate the complexities of balancing economic interests with ongoing political tensions with India. Issues surrounding the killing of Nijjar and the resulting diplomatic strains are expected to continue to be focal points.

On the other hand, with the Conservative Party gaining momentum, Canada’s foreign policy could shift direction. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has been critical of Trudeau’s approach to India and may aim to emphasize trade and economic partnerships, potentially easing tensions. However, Poilievre’s past actions, such as his decision to withdraw from a Diwali event in 2022, have raised concerns within some segments of Canada’s Indian community. His strategy may involve seeking practical solutions while addressing sensitive cultural and political dynamics.
