Workers Trapped in Coal Mine in Assam: Rescue Operations Continue, CM Seeks Help From Army

Many workers are trapped in a coal mine located in the Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district, Assam. The incident occurred around 8 AM on Monday when workers entered the mine to extract coal.

Dima Hasao District Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar Jha, told local media that the exact number of trapped workers remains unknown. Reports indicate that 17 workers have successfully come out of the mine, while about 15 are still believed to be trapped, though this has not been officially confirmed. Rescue operations are in progress, involving emergency response teams, local officials, and mining experts.

Water is being pumped out from the mine using two motor pumps as teams work to locate the trapped workers. A relative of one of the workers reported that some workers have been trapped since the morning due to a sudden influx of water into the mine, which is about 300 feet deep.

It has been reported that water levels have risen to about 100 feet within the mine, preventing the workers from escaping. In response to the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out for assistance from the army for the ongoing relief and rescue operations.

The Dima Hasao district administration has confirmed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team from Hojai has arrived at the scene to aid in the rescue efforts.
