Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025: 8-10 crore devotees expected at Mahakumbh on Mauni Amavasya; boat service to resume following protests from boatmen

On the auspicious occasions of Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti, boat operations from Kila Ghat were temporarilystopped, leading to protests from local boatmen. With four major bathing events remaining, including Mauni Amavasya, the fair administration has reversed its decision and will now permit boats to operate from Kila Ghat to Sangam.

The boat operations were initially banned due to concerns over crowd control and security. The boatmen's association, however, said that during previous Ardh Kumbh and Magh Mela events, devotees routinely traveled to Sangam by boat from Kila Ghat.

This year, however, operations were restricted to Saraswati Ghat and Balua Ghat. This disappointed boatmen and devotees alike. Whiile boatmen suffered financial loss, devotees were forced to walk to their destination.

The boatmen told that this decision had created a major livelihood crisis for many sailors. In response to their concerns, the boatmen's association met with the fair officer, advocating for the restoration of boat services.

Following discussions, CO Jal Police Rajneesh Yadav said that verbal instructions had been received to resume boat operations from Kila Ghat during the main bathing festivals.

8-10 crore devotees likely to attend Maha Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi has said that around 8-10 crore devotees are likely to attend the Maha Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya. To accommodate this influx, he has directed the coordination of train services with the railways, the enhancement of mobile networks, and the assurance of 24-hour electricity and water supply across all sectors.

Additionally, measures such as barricading the ghats and maintaining bus services, including e-buses and shuttles in Prayagraj, are being implemented to ensure smooth logistics during the festivities.
