Telangana: Protests Erupt at Engineering College in Hyderabad Over Video Recordings in Girls Hostel

Several girl students at a private engineering college in Medchal, near Hyderabad, Telangana, raised concerns about suspected video recordings in the hostel toilets, leading to widespread protests. The police gave information about the incident on Thursday, following an outcry from the students.

In response to the incident, Nerella Sharada, Chairperson of the Telangana State Women's Commission, directed the Cyberabad Police Commissioner to conduct a thorough probe and requested a detailed action report as soon as possible.

Members of various student organizations joined the affected students

The protests escalated as members of several student organizations joined the affected students on the college campus and protested on Wednesday night and Thursday. Some protesters forcibly broke locks on the college gate and climbed over it, shouting slogans demanding justice. A police team arrived at the scene after being notified of the situation.

According to a police officer, the girl students suspected that videos were recorded from the girls' toilet, and preliminary probe revealed some negligence on the part of the college management. Police said workers' rooms were constructed behind the girls' hostel.

Five suspects detained

As part of the investigation, five suspects have been detained, and their fingerprints collected. Police checked the suspects' mobile phones but did not find any videos at this stage.

A college official confirmed that a complaint was filed by the students on Wednesday, claiming that someone had filmed from a toilet window. The college has also established a committee to look into the matter, and the mobile phones of the cooking staff have been submitted to the police for checking.

Parents of the students expressed their anxiety over the situation. One parent shared, "Last night our daughter called us in tears, telling us about the incident. We demand safety for our daughters. We cannot tolerate any harm coming to our children, and we are here to speak with the management."
