Subramanian Swamy's Social Media Post After Voting in Delhi Leads to Row, what former IAS Sidhu said?

Voting is currently underway in Delhi to elect a new government, with polls opening at 7 am today. Former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy cast his vote and subsequently shared on social media the details of his voting choice, which has sparked controversy.

In his post on the platform X, Swamy announced that he and his wife had voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and praised the Election Commission for its efficient voting arrangements. He expressed his expectation for the BJP to defeat the Aam Aadmi Party in the elections.

Violation of voting confidentiality rules

However, this disclosure has drawn criticism from former IAS officer KBS Sidhu, who labeled Swamy's post a violation of voting confidentiality rules. Sidhu highlighted Rule 39 of the Conduct of Election Rules 1961, which prohibits voters from publicly revealing their choices on election day. He argued that such public statements could influence other voters and constitute a breach of the Model Code of Conduct, which enforces a 48-hour silent period before elections.

This is not the first time Swamy has publicly shared his voting preferences. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he also revealed his vote for BJP candidate Harsh Malhotra, indicating a pattern of openly discussing his electoral choices.
