Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray met with his cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray at a wedding ceremony in Mumbai, prompting speculation about a likely reconciliation between the two ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra. The politically estranged brothers were seen together at the wedding of government official Mahendra Kalyankar's son in the Andheri area.
During the ceremony, Raj Thackeray interacted with Uddhav and his wife, Rashmi Thackeray. Political analysts suggest that the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) may be considering setting aside their differences, especially in light of the financially significant Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
Raj Thackeray had left the then-unified Shiv Sena in 2005
This meeting marks the third public encounter between the two brothers in the last two months, further fueling speculation about improving relations between their parties. Raj Thackeray left the then-unified Shiv Sena in 2005 and established the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena the following year.
Both leaders may find themselves in need of each other’s support. In the recent Maharashtra assembly elections, Shiv Sena (UBT), part of the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi alliance, secured 20 seats, while the MNS did not win any. A potential alliance between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray could be a crucial step for the MNS to maintain its political relevance.
Ahead of the municipal elections, several leaders from Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) have taken a rebellious stance, as the party faces challenges from Shiv Sena's Operation Tiger. Consequently, the support of the MNS could prove vital for Shiv Sena (UBT) in the forthcoming municipal elections.
