New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: Eyewitnesses Recount the Chaos as Crowds Escalated Beyond Control

New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: A tragic incident occurred at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night around 9:26 PM, resulting in the deaths of 18 people, including 14 women and 3 children. Over 25 others sustained injuries, as confirmed by Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP).

The stampede took place between platforms 13, 14, and 15, where crowds began gathering from 4 PM for going to Prayagraj. Delays of three trains bound for Prayagraj around 8:30 PM exacerbated the situation, leading to an overwhelming surge in the crowd.

Eyewitness Hiralal Mahato recounted, "When it was announced that the train scheduled for platform 12 would now arrive at platform 16, people started moving in from both sides, resulting in a stampede." He said that many were injured on the bridge leading to the platforms, and lamented the lack of crowd control, stating, "The administration arrived an hour later, and by then, the area had been cleared."

Another witness, Ravi, described the chaos: "The stampede happened around 9:30. When those on platform 13 saw the trains on platforms 14 and 15, they rushed over, and the crowd became unmanageable."

Police told people to leave for their safety

Police attempted to manage the situation, advising people to retreat for their safety. Eyewitnesses reported that the station was so overcrowded that even passengers with confirmed tickets struggled to board their trains. Pramod Chaurasia, a passenger heading to Prayagraj, shared, "Despite having a sleeper ticket for the Purushottam Express, the crowd was so dense that we could barely navigate through."

The crowd surge was attributed to train cancellations and delays. Eyewitness Dharmendra Singh sai, "I have never seen such a massive crowd at this station before. I witnessed several women being carried out on stretchers."
