BJP has won the Delhi Assembly by a huge margin. BJP is returning to power in Delhi after a long gap of 27 years. Now the question is arising who will become the Chief Minister of Delhi?
Pravesh Verma, who defeated former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is considered to be a strong contender for the post of Chief Minister.
Pravesh Verma is the Punjabi and Jat face of the BJP. He is the son of former Delhi Chief Minister and BJP leader late Sahib Singh Verma. This family is one of the influential political families of Delhi.
Pravesh Verma's uncle is also in politics. He has been the Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation and he also contested the Assembly elections from Mundka in 2013.
Pravesh's wife Swati Singh is the daughter of Madhya Pradesh BJP leader Vikram Verma. Pravesh Verma has two daughters and a son. Both his daughters also participated actively in the election campaign.
Following in his father's footsteps, Pravesh Verma entered politics. and contested elections for the first time in 2013 and became MLA from Mehrauli.
During the elections, he aggressively criticized the policies of Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party government. He reacted sharply on many issues including pollution management, infrastructure.
He also had a heated argument with Arvind Kejriwal over the misuse of resources in the elections, Yamuna pollution and BJP's allegations of 'Sheesh Mahal' on the official residence of the Chief Minister.
Among other strong contenders for CM post are: Virendra Sachdeva, Satish Upadhyay, Vijendra Gupta and Rekha Gupta
Virendra Sachdeva
Virendra Sachdeva is the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Delhi unit. In 2009, he became the state minister and in 2017 he became the state vice-president.
Virendra Sachdeva was already working on an aggressive strategy before the Lok Sabha elections. He is considered an organization person. Delhi elections have been held under his leadership. In such a situation, Virendra Sachdeva's claim is also being considered strong.
Vijendra Gupta
Former Leader of Opposition and former President Vijendra Gupta is also being said to be involved in the race for Chief Minister in Delhi. He comes from the Vaishya community. Vaishya community is in large numbers in Delhi.
Vijendra Gupta has been vocal and fighting against the Kejriwal government by winning elections continuously.
He has scored a hat-trick by winning three consecutive elections from Rohini seat. This time he has registered his victory by about 38 thousand votes. He is also a member of the National Executive of BJP.
Vijendra Gupta's political journey started in 1997. He was elected as a councilor of Delhi Municipal Corporation for the first time.
Satish Upadhyay
Another candidate in the CM-probable list is Satish Upadhyay. The NDMC Vice Chairman and former Delhi BJP President has also defeated prominent AAP leader Somnath Bharti from Malviya Nagar.
Harish Khurana
Harish Khurana is another son of a former CM who is considered as one of the contenders for the Delhi CM post. Harish defeated AAP's Shivcharan Goel by 11657 from Moti Nagar. His political legacy as well as his organisational experience as BJP Delhi unit secretary and former spokesperson adds to his credentials.
Rekha Gupta
Rekha Gupta's name is also being said to be included in this queue. If BJP has an opinion to make a woman the Chief Minister, then she is included in the first row. Rekha Gupta has won from Shalimar Bagh by about 30 thousand votes.
She lost the 2020 elections on this seat by a narrow margin. Rekha Gupta has also been a councillor of the Delhi Municipal Corporation and the president of the Delhi University Students Union.
Both women and the Vaishya community can be appeased through Rekha Gupta.
However, the BJP has always surprised with its selections. Be it Odisha or Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has always chosen a name that is not much discussed.
