Madhya Pradesh, the state known as the heart of the country, is rapidly emerging as a leading center for the garment and apparel industry due to its strategic location, rich agricultural base, robust infrastructure and investment friendly policies. The state is emerging as a player in the textile industry by taking advantage of its cotton production along with favorable policies.
According to official data, Madhya Pradesh is the sixth largest cotton producer in India, producing about 18.01 lakh bales in 2023-2024. 43 percent of India's organic cotton and 24 percent of global organic cotton production is from Madhya Pradesh. Cotton is the raw material for the textile industry and the state's cotton production is a significant edge for textile manufacturing units.
Mega textile parks at Biaora and Neemuch
The state government has set up various textile parks to promote this sector. According to a state government document on sectoral policy, the mega textile parks at Biaora and Neemuch in the Malwa region will provide infrastructure and incentives to attract investors in the textile sector.
PM Mitra Park to be built in Dhar
The PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel or PM Mitra Park to be built in Dhar will help the state become a leader in large-scale textile manufacturing. Famous for Chanderi, Maheshwari and hand-printed fabrics, Madhya Pradesh is home to a rich tradition of textile industry. The state contributes to the growing silk industry with an annual production of 200 tonnes of silk.
Major companies already present in the state
According to the documents, the skilled workforce in the textile industry in the state is growing, especially in areas such as weaving, spinning and dyeing. The presence of educational institutions and training centres focused on textiles further strengthens the workforce. Major companies already present in the state include Trident Group, Gokaldas Exports Ltd, Maral Overseas, Vardhman Textile, Sagar Group, Raymond, Grasim Industries, Amon, SRF Ltd, Swaraj Suitings Ltd and Nahar Spinning Mills.

State produces a wide range of textiles
The state produces a wide range of textiles, from cotton yarn and woven fabrics to local textiles, apparel and technical textiles. It has seen growth in the production of both traditional handlooms and modern machinery, attracting small and large-scale investments.
State has over 60 large textile mills
The state has more than 60 large textile mills, over 4,000 looms and 25 lakh spindles. While the major textile centres include Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, Dhar, Dewas, Gwalior, Chhindwara and Jabalpur, the ready-made garment clusters are in Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur. The state has received the highest investment of Rs 3,513 crore in the textile sector under the Production Linked Incentive or PLI scheme.
