Chamoli Glacier Burst: 4 workers die, four still missing in Uttarakhand avalanche

Rescue operations resumed on Sunday for the third day to rescue four workers still trapped under several feet of snow at the Mana avalanche site in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. Chamoli District Magistrate Dr. Sandeep Tiwari said that the weather is clear and the rescue operation to rescue the trapped workers has resumed in the morning.

54 Border Roads Organisation workers living near Mana village, situated at an altitude of about 3200 meters, were trapped in the snow due to an avalanche on Friday. The number of workers was earlier being reported to be 55, but after receiving information that a worker had safely reached his home in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, this number was revised to 54.

50 of them were evacuated by Saturday, out of which four died during treatment. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta and GOC of North India Lieutenant General DG Mishra have also reached the avalanche site to monitor the rescue operation.

Chamoli DM Dr. Sandeep Tiwari said that GPR system is also going to come for the search of the missing workers. He hoped that this will speed up the search operation and the missing people will be found today.

Tiwari said that the MI-17 helicopter from the Army has also reached Dehradun for relief work and is about to arrive at the spot. He said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also on the spot while more NDRF personnel are also about to reach.

The District Magistrate said that at present seven helicopters including a private helicopter from the Army are engaged in relief and rescue work. He said that the work of bringing the injured people from Mana through helicopter has started.
