Chamoli Glacier Burst: 50 workers rescued so far in Uttarakhand's avalanche; Dhami updates PM Modi


An avalanche occurred in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, on February 28 at 7:15 AM, resulting in a snow slide that trapped 55 people. By 8 PM the previous night, 33 people had been rescued, and an additional 17 people were evacuated today on Saturday. The search continues for one missing persons, and there are reports of four workers presumed dead, although this has not been officially confirmed.


Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said that 4 army helicopters are currently being deployed in the rescue efforts. Over 200 personnel from the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are engaged in the operation. The incident took place in Mana village, approximately 3 kilometers from Badrinath.


Brigadier MS Dhillon said that the army has been conducting continuous rescue operations since the morning of the incident, working throughout the night. A total of 25 workers have been transported from Mana to the Joshimath Army Hospital, and efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining persons.


Dhami updates PM


Prime Minister Modi has been updated on the rescue operations by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dhami, who visited the site this morning. Dhami reported that a total of 57 workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were present on the Chamoli-Badrinath Highway at the time of the avalanche, with 2 workers on leave. The workers were in a container house when a significant amount of snow slid down the mountain, burying them.


Among the 55 workers trapped in the avalanche, there are 11 from Bihar, 11 from Uttar Pradesh, 11 from Uttarakhand, 7 from Himachal Pradesh, 1 from Jammu and Kashmir, and 1 from Punjab.
