Gudi Padwa 2025: The holy festival of Gudi Padwa is being celebrated across the country on Sunday, March 30. Gudi Padwa is one of the important festivals of Maharashtra. It is celebrated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. On this day the New Year begins and people celebrate this festival with new dreams, hopes and enthusiasm. This festival symbolizes the arrival of spring and new beginnings.


Different parts of India celebrate the Gudi Padwa festival under different names, it is known as Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Yugadi in Karnataka, Bihu in Assam, and Poila Baisakh in West Bengal. Other communities such as the Konkanis and Sindhis observe it under the names Sanvsar Padvo and Cheti Chand, respectively. 


History And Significance


One of the sacred texts of the Hindus, the Brahma Purana states that Lord Brahma recreated the world after a raging deluge in which all time had stopped and all the people of the world, were destroyed. At the Gudi Padva Festival, time restarted and from this day on, the era of truth and justice (known as Satyug) began. Therefore, Lord Brahma is worshipped on this day.


Special dishes are made


Special dishes are made in homes on the day of Gudi Padwa. There are other rituals in Maharashtra. Overall, this festival is considered a symbol of prosperity and happiness. We are going to tell you about the traditions and customs related to Gudi Padwa celebrated in Maharashtra. 


Gudi is installed on the door or window


The most special tradition of Gudi Padwa is to make 'Gudi'. It is installed on the door or window of the house. To make it, a wooden or bamboo stick is taken. A copper or silver urn is placed upside down on its upper end. After this, a dhoti or sari with a shiny border is tied on it. It is decorated with neem or mango leaves and garlands of flowers.


Significance of installing Gudi


The religious significance of installing Gudi is that it removes evil forces and brings happiness and prosperity in the house. This is the reason why Gudi is definitely installed in all the houses of Maharashtra.


Neem and jaggery prasad is distributed


After the puja, first of all neem leaves and jaggery are mixed and distributed among the people as prasad. It is mandatory for everyone to eat it. It is also considered beneficial for health.


It is said that eating this prasad strengthens immunity. Some people also add coriander and tamarind to it, which boosts its taste and nutrition. It is also considered a symbol of maintaining a balance of sweet and bitter experiences in life.


Traditional Marathi dishes are prepared


Traditional dishes are made in Maharashtra on the day of Gudi Padwa, which include puran poli, khadi shakkar, shrikhand, puri, sabudana vada. Puran poli can also be called roti filled with sweet gram lentils. Shrikhand is made from curd. Puri is eaten with this. With these dishes, family members enjoy this special day together.


Rangoli is made on the main door


It is very important to clean the house before Gudi Padwa. After this the house is decorated. There is also a tradition of making rangoli on the main door of the house. It is made with colorful powder and through it, happiness is wished for the family.
