Kunal Kamra Controversy: What Jaya Bachchan said while defending comedian's right to freedom of expression

Maharashtra politics has intensified following stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's taunt directed at Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, sparking widespread discussion. Several political figures, including Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) MPs, have reacted to the controversy.

Jaya Bachchan has stepped forward to defend Kamra's right to freedom of expression. She slammed the actions of those who vandalized the venue in Mumbai where Kamra's show was filmed. Speaking to media personnel on the Parliament premises, Bachchan questioned the limitations imposed on freedom of expression in the country.

Reacting to the vandalism at the Comedy Club, she stated, "If there is a ban on speaking, what will happen to you? You are in a bad position anyway. You are banned. You will only be asked to speak on this and nothing else; do not interview Jaya Bachchan."

She further expressed, “Where is the freedom of speech? Freedom of action is only when there is a ruckus – beating up the opposition, raping women, killing them. What else? You (Eknath Shinde) left your real party and formed another party for power. Isn’t that an insult to Balasaheb?”

Every comment made by the comedian was valid: Sawant

Additionally, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant defended Kunal Kamra, asserting that every comment made by the comedian in his comedy special, Naya Bharat, was valid. In a media interaction, Sawant insisted, “As far as what Kunal Kamra did, I think every word, every sentence he said is correct. That is what everyone in the opposition is accusing him of. He said this in the form of a poem. If we say there is democracy in this country and we believe in it, we should accept all this.”

The incident at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai escalated when a group from Shiv Sena's (Eknath Shinde) youth wing entered the venue during another live show, forcing the event to shut down and causing major damage to the set. According to Sub Inspector Vijay of Khar Police Station, the group targeted the venue following the release of Kamra's stand-up special Naya Bharat.
