China has launched a 10G broadband network in Sunan County of Hebei province. Here "G" means gigabit, not generation. This is the world's first commercial wired broadband network that gives speeds up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps).
It is not related to wireless mobile networks like 5G or 6G. Huawei and China Unicom have jointly launched this network.
It provides download speed of 9,834 Mbps and upload speed of 1,008 Mbps with 3 millisecond latency. Understand this speed in such a way that downloading a 4K movie of about 20 GB size usually takes about 7-10 minutes on a 1 Gbps connection. With the new 10G broadband network, it will take less than 20 seconds.
Will support remote surgery, telemedicine, remote education
10G network is designed to support data-intensive, low-latency applications. It will be useful in seamless cloud gaming, remote surgery and AI-driven smart homes.
Apart from this, it will also support smart cities, telemedicine, remote education and smart agriculture. For example, it can handle real-time data processing for autonomous driving systems. This is part of China's plans.
China has become a leader in global broadband technology
The experimental project has been rolled out in two locations. The idea is to demonstrate how such networks can operate in real-world conditions, from residential homes to industrial factories. With the launch of 10G broadband network, China has become a leader in global broadband technology. It has surpassed the current commercial broadband speeds of countries like UAE and Qatar, where the average speed is 543 mbps and 521 mbps.
China's broadband speed is 100 times faster than India's
India's broadband infrastructure relies primarily on wireless technologies such as fibre-optic (FTTH), DSL, cable and 5G fixed wireless access (FWA). In this, the average download speed in Delhi is 77.2 Mbps and upload speed is 54.7 Mbps.
Some providers, such as JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber advertise plans up to 1 Gbps, but real-world speeds are often lower due to infrastructure limitations. India's average fixed broadband speed in March 2025 was 58.62 Mbps for download and 50.42 Mbps for upload. It was ranked 87th in the world.
Huawei was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Shenzhen. It is a global leader in telecom equipment and network solutions. The company has played a key role in advancing optical broadband and 5G technologies.
