Scientists study Impact of Yagna Rituals on Rainfall: A Unique Study at Mahakal Temple Ujjain

Ujjain: A special ritual is currently taking place at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, aimed at invoking good rainfall across the country. Twenty-five priests from Maharashtra and Karnataka are performing the six-day 'Saumik Suvrishti Anushthan,' with Tuesday marking its final day. This ritual holds both religious significance and scientific interest, as researchers from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and students from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Bhopal are investigating whether yagna and havan can influence rainfall.

For the first time, scientists are examining the micro-particles emitted from the flames of the yagna. Using advanced instruments, they aim to understand the atmospheric changes that may occur due to such rituals.

Data on seven critical parameters is recorded

The primary objective of the research is to determine the efficacy of yagnas in inducing rain. A Tether Sonde Machine and Automatic Weather Station (AWS) have been installed to continuously record data on seven critical parameters: air pressure, temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, direction, and radiation. Additionally, researchers are collecting gas samples from the atmosphere using a specialized balloon.

The Tether Sonde machine is being employed to gather atmospheric data at various altitudes. Scientists are analyzing the levels of gases present before and after the ritual commenced, focusing on potential changes in nitrogen oxide, nitric oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide levels. They are also monitoring particulate matter concentrations, specifically PM2.5 and PM10.
