Pahalgam attack: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appeals to India and Pakistan

The United Nations has appealed to both India and Pakistan to 'exercise maximum restraint' regarding the increasing tension between the two countries after the Pahalgam attack.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said that the Secretary-General has not had 'direct contact' with any government in the last 24 hours. But he is 'monitoring the situation with concern.'

He said Guterres “very much" appeals to both the governments of India and Pakistan to “exercise maximum restraint and to ensure that the situation and the developments we've seen do not deteriorate any further.

"Any issues between Pakistan and India, we believe can be and should be resolved peacefully, through meaningful, mutual engagement,” Dujarric said.

India on Wednesday downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and announced several measures, including expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post in view of the cross-border links to the horrific terror attack.

India has decided to pause the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Dujarric said they hope both sides will be careful and avoid actions that could make the situation worse or increase tensions in the area. Earlier this week, Guterres spoke out against an armed attack that happened in Pahalgam, calling it very serious.

The United Nations condemned the extremist attack in Pahalgam during a press conference on Thursday.

"We believe that any issue between Pakistan and India can be resolved peacefully through dialogue," UN said.

There was a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. 26 people died in this attack and many people were injured.
