India’s S-400 defence system proves effective against Pakistan aerial attack

The Indian Air Force deployed its S-400 air defence systems on Wednesday night and thwarted an aerial attack by Pakistan in retaliation for Operation Sindoor, sources said.

According to defence officials, Pakistan tried to strike several military targets across northern and western India using drones and missiles. The targets included bases in Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj. The projectiles were intercepted and neutralised by the S-400 air defence systems, dubbed “Sudarshan Chakra”.

The Russian-made S-400 systems used in the interception are among the most advanced in the world. They can track targets up to 600 kilometers away and intercept threats at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. India has deployed four squadrons so far: one in Pathankot for the defense of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, and another covers strategic areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The S-400 missile system has been deployed, especially keeping China and Pakistan in mind. Its range is between 40 to 400 km. An agreement for this S-400 missile technology was signed between India and Russia during Russian President Putin's visit to India in October 2018. At present, this missile technology is considered to be the most powerful defense system in the world.
