Operation Sindoor: Akash missile system foiled Pakistan's attacks, Indian Army tells how it destroyed Pakistani drones and missiles

The Indian Army had shot down over 50 Pakistani drones during a massive counter-drone operation along the LoC and international borders (IB). The Indian armed forces also foiled the Pakistan Army's attempts to launch a massive drone and missile attack on multiple Indian military installations in northern and western India during the night of May 7-8 and destroyed air defence systems in Lahore.

According to defence officials, the indigenously developed 'Akash' missile surface-to-air air defence system played a key role in foiling Pakistani drone attacks targeting Indian assets.

Multiple drone attacks foiled

During the intervening night of May 8 and May 9, the Indian Army successfully foiled and responded to multiple drone attacks by Pakistan along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Both the Indian Army and the Air Force have deployed missile systems along the Pakistan border, the officials said.

The Akash air defence missile system is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile system that provides regional air defence against multiple air threats to mobile, semi-mobile and static vulnerable forces and areas. Real-time multi-sensor data processing and threat assessment enables simultaneous targeting of multiple targets from any direction.

The Indian Army said that during the midnight of 8 and 9 May, the Indian Army responded decisively to multiple drone attacks and ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army said that "Pakistan Armed Forces carried out multiple attacks using drones and other weapons along the entire western border on the intervening night of 8 and 9 May 2025. The Indian Army is committed to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation. All nefarious designs will be given a befitting reply."
