Pahalgam attack: India closes airspace for Pakistani planes, ban imposed till May 23

Amid rising tensions with Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack, India on Wednesday retaliated and closed its airspace for Pakistani planes.

Officials said that this ban will be in effect from May 1 to May 23. In this regard, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a NOTAM on Wednesday evening. NOTAM i.e. 'Notice to Airmen' is issued regarding flights in the airspace.

This ban means that Indian airspace will not be available for planes registered in Pakistan, planes operated, owned or leased by Pakistani airlines and operators.

A senior government official said that this ban will also apply to Pakistan's military planes.

Pakistan uses Indian airspace for flights to many countries

There are no direct flights between India and Pakistan. Pakistani airlines use Indian airspace for their flights to Singapore, Malaysia and other East Asian countries.

On April 23, a day after the Pahalgam attack on April 22, India took several steps against Pakistan. This included 'suspending' the Indus Water Treaty, closing the only operational land border crossing at Attari and reducing diplomatic relations.

In response, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian aircraft and suspended all trade with India through third countries.

Regarding the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan has said that if any attempt is made to stop or divert the water, it will consider it a 'declaration of war'.
