Earthquake rocks Pakistan, inmates flee from Karachi jail


Karachi: An earthquake struck the coastal city of Marmaris, adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea in Turkey, on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Its effect was also seen in Karachi, Pakistan. An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude shook Pakistan. The earthquake did not cause much damage, but under its cover 216 prisoners escaped from Karachi's Malir Jail. The dreaded criminals are roaming freely on the streets.

Giving information about the incident, the Malir Jail administration said that strong earthquake tremors were felt at night. As a precaution, the prisoners were taken out of the barracks. Taking advantage of this opportunity, some prisoners escaped from the main gate.

At the same time, some media reports have claimed that the prisoners have escaped by breaking the prison wall. The number of prisoners who escaped from the jail is being reported differently, but Geo News has confirmed that over 200 prisoners escaped from the main gate. Out of these, 80 prisoners have been caught again, while 135 prisoners are still absconding. Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed this on Tuesday morning. He said that no wall of the jail was broken.

Home Minister Lanjar said that during the earthquake all the prisoners in the jail were taken out of the barracks. There are about 1000 prisoners in this jail. There was chaos in the jail. Taking advantage of this, some prisoners have escaped. According to the jail administration, a search operation has been started. In this operation, teams of Special Security Unit (SSU), Rapid Response Force (RRF), Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) are working together. 

It is reported that there was a race among the prisoners to escape. During this stampede one prisoner died. At the same time 4 security personnel were injured while trying to stop the prisoners.
