India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test match of the 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy' being played at Edgbaston ground. With this, India has equaled the five-match Test series 1-1.
The ICC has posted on X and called it a great victory. According to the ICC, this is India's biggest win in a Test on foreign soil, India's first Test win at Edgbaston and Shubman Gill's first Test win as captain.
India had lost the first Test played at Headingley ground in Leeds.
In that match, Gill scored a century in the first innings and Indian batsmen scored five centuries in both innings, yet India lost the match.
This started discussions about Gill's captaincy. Questions also arose whether the team management had made any concrete plans for the new captain after the sudden retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj and Akash Deep fulfilled the bowling responsibility in this Test brilliantly.
Siraj took a total of seven wickets in the match (six in the first innings and one in the second), while Akash Deep repeatedly stopped England's batting by taking 10 wickets (four in the first innings and six in the second).
With the new ball, both of them constantly put the English batsmen in trouble and this became the real foundation of India's big victory.
Shubman Gill sets several records
In this series against England, Shubman Gill has set several records. He now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single Test match as an Indian batsman.
With his double century in the first innings of the second Test, he scored a total of 430 runs in this match. Previously, Sunil Gavaskar held the record with 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971, while VVS Laxman scored 340 runs against Australia in 2001.
Sourav Ganguly is also included in this list, having scored 330 runs in a Test against Pakistan in 2007. Additionally, Virender Sehwag scored 319 runs against South Africa in 2008.
So far in the series, Gill has scored 585 runs, marking the highest score by an Indian batsman in his first Test series as captain. Previously, Virat Kohli had scored 449 runs in Australia during the 2014-15 series.
Gill achieved another milestone in this innings, becoming the tenth batsman in world cricket to score both a double century and a century in the same Test match.
The second Indian name on this list is Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 124 runs in the first innings and 220 runs in the second innings during the 1971 Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain.
