Bihar Assembly elections-2025: Will IRCTC scam prove to be a big setback for Lalu, his family, and Grand Alliance

The IRCTC scam is causing fresh troubles for Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, especially with the Bihar Assembly elections-2025 coming up. This situation is seen as a big setback for Lalu, his family, and the Grand Alliance.

The scam goes back to when Lalu was the Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009. It involves alleged corruption in how contracts were given for two hotels, BNR Ranchi and BNR Puri, which are managed by IRCTC.

Hotel contracts were wrongly awarded to a pvt company

The CBI claims that these hotel contracts were wrongly awarded to a private company, Sujata Hotels Private Limited. According to the CBI, the bidding process was unfairly handled to benefit this company, and in return, land was sold to a company linked to Lalu's family at a very low price.

Land was transferred for only Rs 65 lakh

The CBI also said that IRCTC got railway land for a hotel project in Ranchi at a much lower price than its actual value. Despite the land's circle rate being Rs 32 crore and market value being Rs 94 crore, the land was transferred for only Rs 65 lakh. CBI allege that land was given in exchange for jobs and contracts in the railways, a scheme known as "Land for Jobs."

Charges Also Against Rabri and Tejashwi

Lalu Prasad Yadav is the main person accused in this case, said to be the mastermind behind the scam. His wife, Rabri Devi, is also implicated in the land deal, and their son, Tejashwi Yadav, is accused of benefiting from family connections. Additionally, four IRCTC officials and the director of Sujata Hotels are among the 14 people charged. The court has stated that the conspiracy happened with Lalu's knowledge, and the case is now moving to trial.

Will 'Bihari Chanakya' be able to find a solution?

This case could become a major issue against the Lalu family and his party, the RJD, ahead of the Bihar assembly elections-2025. Experts also say that this is a weapon the NDA can use to defeat the Grand Alliance in Bihar. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Lalu devises a solution to this 'weapon'.
