Cyclone Shakti Forms in Arabian Sea; alert issued for Maharashtra, check IMD predictions
A low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea has turned into a cyclone called Cyclone Shakti, named by Sri Lanka. An alert has been issued for Maharashtra from October 3 to 7.
The cyclone will affect areas like Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 45-55 km/h, with stronger gusts up to 65 km/h or more. High waves are also anticipated along the Maharashtra coast until October 5.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this is the first cyclone after the monsoon in the Arabian Sea, but it will not hit land in India. However, strong winds, heavy rain, and high waves are expected in Gujarat and northern Maharashtra until October 7.
Rough sea conditions expected along Gujarat and northern Maharashtra coasts
The cyclone is expected to weaken by October 6. As of Friday night, it was about 300 kilometers west of Dwarka and moving slowly towards the Gujarat coast. It has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday.
Under the influence of Shakti, sea conditions along and off the Gujarat and north Maharashtra coasts, as well as near the Pakistan coastline, are expected to remain rough to very rough until Sunday. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the northwest, northeast, or central Arabian Sea, and along and off the Gujarat–north Maharashtra coast, until at least Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall expected in many districts of Maharashtra
Fishermen are warned not to go into the Arabian Sea until October 7. The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in many districts of Maharashtra, especially in Vidarbha and Marathwada, with possible flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan. The Maharashtra government has instructed local officials to prepare for the cyclone and ensure safety measures for residents.
Deep depression in the Bay of Bengal
Additionally, a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has caused heavy rain and flooding in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Four people died in Andhra Pradesh due to rain-related incidents, and two died in a landslide in Odisha, with others still missing. Rescue operations are ongoing.
