From 'Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat' to Immortality: Sandhya Shantaram Iconic Star of 'Navrang' and 'Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje' is no more


Actress Sandhya Shantaram, known for her roles in films like "Navrang," "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje," and "Do Aankhen Barah Haath," has passed away at the age of 93.

Sandhya Shantaram, a renowned actress in Hindi and Marathi films, who starred in popular films like "Navrang," "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje," "Do Aankhen Barah Haath," and "Pinjara" (Marathi), has passed away at the age of 93.

Her real name was Vijaya Deshmukh, and she was born on September 20, 1932.

Vijaya, also known as Sandhya, was the third wife of the late V. Shantaram, a well-known film producer and director. V. Shantaram is also credited with giving Sandhya a break in the film industry.

Her son, Kiran Shantaram, confirmed the death of his mother, Sandhya Shantaram. He stated, "My mother passed away yesterday (Oct 3) evening at around 10:30 pm at our residence in Rajkamal Studios in Mumbai."

Kiran Shantaram said, "My mother had been ill for several days due to her old age. She had also been suffering from a fever for a few days. Due to her advanced age, her memory was failing her. Last night, after dinner, her health suddenly deteriorated and she passed away. This morning, her last rites were performed at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Mumbai."

Sandhya was first cast by renowned filmmaker V. Shantaram in his Marathi film "Amar Bhopali" (1951). Subsequently, actress Sandhya appeared in numerous Hindi and Marathi films directed by V. Shantaram, including "Navrang," "Pinjara" (Marathi), "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje," "Do Aankhen Barah Haath," "Teen Batti Chaar Rasta," and "Jal Bin Bijli Nritya Bin Bijli."

Was awarded Filmfare Award 

Sandhya Shantaram appeared in many of the best Bollywood films of the 1950s. She has also been awarded a Filmfare Award for her acting. Although Sandhya Shantaram has spent a considerable amount of time in Bollywood, she is best known for her famous song "Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat."

This song was filmed on her in the 1959 film "Navrang," sung by Asha Bhosle. However, Sandhya Shantaram's expressions were highly praised. The song's special feature is its playful lyrics, which make it a hit even today. It is still played with great enthusiasm during the festival of Holi. People dance to it heartily.
