How Madhya Pradesh Has Achieved Top Place in Country in Tomato Production

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh tops in the country in tomato production, a testament to the success of the state's agricultural policies. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav expressed his happiness over this achievement, stating that the PMFME scheme and 50% seed subsidy have significantly increased farmers' income.

In 2023-24, Madhya Pradesh produced 34.98 lakh tonnes of tomatoes, representing 16.4% of the country's total production. This is not only the result of farmers' hard work, but also the outcome of modern technologies and government support.

50% subsidy on tomato seeds

The government is providing a 50% subsidy on tomato seeds, which has reduced farmers' production costs. This has led to the increased use of new hybrid varieties that yield higher yields.

Yield per acre has increased

Tomato cultivation is now being practiced on a large scale in districts such as Shivpuri, Jhabua, and Shajapur. Farmers report that while the previous yield was 20-25 tons per acre, it has now doubled to 40-50 tons. This subsidy is also helping small farmers enter the mainstream market.

Tomato processing receives a boost

Tomato processing has received a boost under Prime Minister Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme. Farmers in Sagar, Ratlam, Indore, Chhindwara, and Dhar are now producing products like sauces, purees, and ketchup. This has prevented wastage of produce and doubled incomes. CM Dr Mohan Yadav stated that this scheme is empowering farmers to become entrepreneurs, strengthening the rural economy. The production target for next year is 40 lakj tons.

Future Prospects

MP plans to increase tomato exports, which will elevate farmers' self-reliance. Emphasis on modern irrigation and organic farming is improving quality. This achievement is an inspiration for other states.
