Patna: According to religious belief, Mata Sita performed the first Chhath Puja on the banks of the Ganges in Munger, Bihar, marking the beginning of the grand festival.

Chhath is considered a grand festival of Bihar. It is celebrated with great pomp and show not only in Bihar but also in other states of the country. The Chhath festival holds special significance in Munger, Bihar.

There are many legends associated with the Chhath festival, but according to religious belief, Mata Sita performed the first Chhath Puja on the banks of the Ganges in Munger, Bihar. This marked the beginning of the grand festival. As evidence of this, Mother Sita's footprints remain even today.

According to Valmiki Ramayana, Mata Sita once stayed at Sita Charan in the historic city of Munger for six days and performed Chhath Puja. When Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, he decided to perform the Rajasuya Yagya, at the behest of sages and saints, to atone for the sin of killing Ravana.

Sage Mugdal was invited for this, but Sage Mugdal ordered Lord Ram and Sita to come to his own ashram. Upon the sage's command, Lord Ram and Sita came here in person and were told about the ritual. Sage Mugdal purified Mata Sita by sprinkling Ganga water on her and instructed her to worship the Sun God on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month. Staying here, Mata Sita worshipped the Sun God for six days.

It is believed that the place where Mata Sita performed the Chhath Puja, her footprints are still visible. Later, the people of the Jaffar Nagar Diara region constructed a temple there. It is known as the Sita Charan Temple. This temple is submerged every year in the floods of the Ganges. The stone bearing Sita's footprints remains submerged in the Ganges for months. Despite this, her footprints remain undisturbed.

Devotees have deep faith in this temple and the footprints of Mata Sita. Villagers say that people from other states also come here year-round to pay their respects. The wishes of the devotees who come here are fulfilled. According to the temple priest, no devotee who visits the Sita Charan Temple returns empty-handed.
