Are fake wedding cards becoming a new weapon of cyber fraud: How can you stay safe?

🎧 Listen:

During wedding season, it's common to receive wedding invitations on WhatsApp. However, there's a new scam called the WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam. Scammers are sending fake wedding cards to people's phones that can lead to financial loss.

How Does This Scam Work? Scammers send attractive digital wedding cards from unknown numbers. These cards often include a link, QR code, or PDF file. They use emotional messages like "Please attend our wedding" to trick people into clicking on the link.

Criminals send malicious digital invitations, often via WhatsApp, that contain a hidden APK file. Installing this file can give hackers full control of your phone, allowing them to steal banking information, compromise your accounts, and commit identity theft.

By clicking the link, harmful software can be installed on your phone. This software can steal your banking information, passwords, and personal details. In some cases, it can even take over your phone completely.

Why Is This Scam Increasing? People are more likely to open wedding invitations quickly because they are emotional. Scammers make these cards look very real, so many people mistakenly believe they are genuine. This has led to significant financial losses for many.

Safety tips

Don’t open links, PDFs, or websites from unknown numbers.

If the message seems to be from someone you know, call them to check.
