India to host Commonwealth Games 2030; to be held in Ahmedabad; PM Modi greets nation; why is hosting CWG special?

India has been awarded the hosting of Commonwealth Games 2030. Ahmedabad was declared the host city following a meeting of the Commonwealth Sports Executive Board in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday.

India will host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) after a gap of 20 years. Previously, the games were held in New Delhi in 2010. 

In addition to the CWG, India has also hosted the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games. The Afro-Asian Cup was also held in Hyderabad in 2003.

PM Modi greets nation

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has expressed delight at India winning the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.

PM Modi emphasized that this achievement reflects India’s collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship which has placed India firmly on the global sporting map.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote:

“Delighted that India has won the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030!

Congratulations to the people of India and the sporting ecosystem. It is our collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map.

With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to be celebrating these historic games with great enthusiasm. 

We look forward to welcoming the world!"

Why is hosting the CWG special? 

Hosting the Commonwealth Games is not just a sporting event for a country, but also a symbol of its international image, development potential, infrastructure, and vision. Nine countries, including Australia, England, India, Canada, and New Zealand, have hosted the event so far. Australia holds the record for hosting the most number of times, with five.

India's bid for the 2036 Olympics will be strengthened

Winning the hosting rights of Commonwealth Games 2030 will strengthen India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics. India is also preparing to host the 2036 Olympics. PM Narendra Modi announced this from the Red Fort. In November last year, India submitted its bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
