Madhya Pradesh: South Panna Forest Division Wins State Award for Biodiversity Conservation; Know About Rich Wildlife of This Region
The South Panna Forest Division has been honored with the "Best Department for Biodiversity Conservation" award at the State-Level Annual Biodiversity Awards 2024–25. This award was presented by the Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board during an event organized at the Indian Institute of Forest Management in Bhopal on the occasion of 'International Biodiversity Day.'
The division was recognized for its efforts to protect biodiversity through innovative ideas and active public participation. Forest officials undertook detailed documentation of birds, butterflies, medicinal plants, heritage trees, natural springs, and other significant biological assets within the region. Awareness programs were also organized in villages to encourage local communities to participate in conservation activities.
Vulture conservation
One of the division's most significant achievements has been in the field of vulture conservation. Through the establishment of "vulture-friendly Gaushalas (cow shelters), regular monitoring, strict control over restricted veterinary drugs, and the cooperation of local communities, the vulture population in the region has witnessed a remarkable increase. The vulture population rose from 614 in 2021 to 1,127 in 2025–26.
Snakes and Ladders Game to spread awareness
The division also launched a unique educational game, "Snakes and Ladders," to spread awareness regarding snakebite prevention and to mitigate human-snake conflict. Through this initiative, children and villagers were taught first-aid techniques and scientific information related to snakes in a simple and engaging manner.
In the 'Individual Government Official' category, Forest Guard Jagdish Prasad Ahirwar won the first prize, while Forest Guard Virendra Patel secured the second position for his work in documenting medicinal plants and bird species.
The Dindori Forest Division was also honored for its outstanding work related to biodiversity conservation and 'Access and Benefit Sharing' (ABS) agreements.
