Tamil Nadu Politics: Power Struggle Intensifies in Tamil Nadu! Vijay's TVK Warns of Major Political Upheaval; Alleges Collusion Between DMK and AIADMK
Tamil Nadu politics has currently reached a highly dramatic juncture. The party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay—the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—has issued a stern warning: if either the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) attempts to form the government, all of the party's MLAs will resign. This statement has further raised the political temperature in the state.
TVK Claims Status as 'Largest Party'; Controversy Over Governor's Decision
Having secured 107 seats in the Assembly elections, the TVK is asserting itself as the "largest party" and staking a claim to form the government. The party argues that, in accordance with constitutional conventions, it should be given the first opportunity to form the government.
However, Governor R.V. Arlekar has declined to invite Vijay to form the government. The Governor explicitly stated that the TVK currently lacks the support of the 118 MLAs required to secure a legislative majority.
Talks Underway with Smaller Parties
The TVK currently enjoys the support of five MLAs from the Indian National Congress; however, the party still requires the backing of 10 additional MLAs to reach the numerical threshold required for a legislative majority. According to sources, the party is in contact with Leftist parties and several smaller regional parties. Meanwhile, the TVK is also preparing to take this entire matter to court.
Intense Deliberations Within the DMK; Discussions Underway on Extending Outside Support to the AIADMK
According to political sources, various options are currently being deliberated within the DMK as well. Reports suggest that, under one proposed formula, M.K. Stalin's party might consider extending outside support to the AIADMK. The party's youth leaders fear that if Vijay were to rise to power, he could potentially dominate the political landscape for an extended period—much like former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran did. However, the party's senior leaders are reportedly not yet fully in agreement regarding this strategic move.
AIADMK Currently in 'Wait-and-Watch' Mode
On the other hand, the AIADMK has also instructed its legislators to remain calm for the time being and to keep a close watch on the unfolding situation. While some party leaders are reportedly in favor of a potential alliance with the TVK, the top leadership has currently ruled out such a possibility. Meanwhile, several leaders—including actor Kamal Haasan—have come out in support of Vijay and have raised questions regarding the Governor's stance on the matter.
