W Bengal: Most Legislators Skip Mamata Banerjee's Meeting with TMC MLAs; What Party MLA Kunal Ghosh Told?
Kolkata: A meeting convened on Sunday by former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee could not proceed as scheduled, as the majority of the party's MLAs failed to attend.
The meeting was slated to take place at 3 PM at Banerjee's residence in Kalighat, Kolkata. However, only about 20 MLAs arrived for the meeting, while approximately 60 remained absent, compelling the party to postpone the session.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh explained that the MLAs were occupied with preparations for statewide protests scheduled for June 1. According to him, these protests are being organized to condemn alleged attacks on the party's National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, and MP Kalyan Banerjee. He further added that those MLAs who were unable to attend the meeting had already informed the party leadership regarding their prior engagements.
Protest against eviction of hawkers and post-poll violence
Ghosh also announced that the TMC would stage a symbolic sit-in demonstration on June 2, led by Mamata Banerjee. This protest is scheduled to take place on Rani Rashmoni Road, near the Esplanade in central Kolkata.
The party intends to raise issues such as the alleged post-poll violence and the ongoing anti-encroachment drives in various parts of the state—specifically where hawkers are reportedly being evicted using bulldozers. TMC leaders stated that the party would continue its campaign regarding these issues in the days to come.
