As India gears up for the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon-2026, the impact of inclement weather has already begun to manifest in several parts of the country.

On Tuesday, two incidents of cloudbursts were reported in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. One of these incidents occurred in the remote Sarthal area, while the other took place in Machhipal. These events triggered landslides in several locations, resulting in road closures and disrupting traffic movement within the region.

Officials stated that, so far, there have been no reports of casualties or major damage. Teams comprising personnel from the Police, Revenue Department, Red Cross, and other agencies have been dispatched to assess the situation and provide assistance where necessary.

Union Minister and MP Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with local residents to ensure that immediate assistance can be provided should the need arise.

Storms and heavy rainfall cib Rajasthan and MP

Meanwhile, storms and heavy rainfall claimed the lives of five people across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch district, a woman and her son died on Monday night after the roof of their house collapsed during heavy rains. In Rajasthan, three people—including two children—lost their lives in the Jaisalmer and Barmer districts following incidents of wall collapses.

Monsoon expected to reach Kerala around June 4

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the Southwest Monsoon is expected to reach Kerala around June 4, marking the official commencement of the monsoon season in the country. Typically, the monsoon arrives in Kerala on or around June 1 and subsequently advances gradually across the rest of India over the following weeks.

Conditions favorable for the further advancement of the monsoon

According to the IMD, weather conditions are currently favorable for the further advancement of the monsoon into the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, and parts of Tamil Nadu. In the coming days, it is expected to advance into additional regions of the Bay of Bengal. As preparations for the arrival of the monsoon get underway, officials are keeping a close watch on changing weather patterns—particularly in areas already experiencing damage due to heavy rainfall and storms.
