Ujjain Mahakal News: Mahakal Temple's assets made public; full details revealed—from Rs 472 crore in FD to 90 acres of land
The disclosure of the assets of the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain has become a topic of discussion across the country. This time, the temple committee has shared details not only of donations and income but also of its entire financial portfolio and immovable assets.
Amidst recent questions regarding offerings and security arrangements at major temples across the nation, this move by the Mahakal Temple is being viewed as a significant step towards transparency. According to the committee, the temple holds fixed deposits worth hundreds of crores of rupees, crores in cash, substantial quantities of gold and silver, and approximately 90 acres of land.
The sharp rise in the number of devotees following the development of the 'Mahakal Lok' corridor has had a direct impact on the temple's income and donations. Consequently, the temple's financial position has strengthened considerably, although the expenditure on managing operations and facilities is also rising alongside the increasing crowds.
Temple's financial position robust
According to the financial statement released by the temple committee, Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple holds fixed deposits (FDs) totaling approximately Rs 472 crore. These funds are deposited across various banks, including United Bank of India and Bank of India.
Additionally, there is a cash balance of around Rs 16 crore across different bank accounts. The committee also possesses approximately 90 acres of valuable land, which is considered crucial for future plans and temple-related development projects. The public disclosure of both movable and immovable assets has provided people with a clear understanding of the temple's actual financial standing.
Gold and silver reserves steadily increasing
Donations received by the Mahakal Temple are not limited to cash; contributions of gold and silver are also consistently on the rise. According to the committee, the temple possesses gold worth over Rs 300 crore and approximately 20 quintals of silver. During the year 2025, devotees donated around 600 kilograms of silver and nearly 1.5 kilograms of gold to the temple.
Compared to 2024, silver donations increased by approximately 193 kilograms, while a slight decline was recorded in gold donations. This clearly indicates that devotees from across the country and abroad are contributing generously to the temple in accordance with their faith.
Number of devotees surged manifold
Since the inauguration of 'Mahakal Lok' in October 2022, Ujjain has emerged as a major hub for religious tourism. While previously around 40,000 to 50,000 devotees visited daily to seek blessings from Baba Mahakal, the number now ranges from 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh on ordinary days. This figure multiplies significantly during weekends, the holy month of Sawan, Mahashivratri, and other special occasions. This surge in devotees has not only boosted Ujjain's economy but also led to a remarkable increase in the temple's income and donations.
Up to Rs 135 crore spent annually on devotee amenities
The temple committee's responsibilities have expanded alongside the growing number of devotees. Substantial annual expenditure is incurred on security, cleanliness, crowd management, electricity, maintenance, staff salaries, and facilities for devotees. According to the committee, the temple's annual expenditure has currently reached approximately Rs 135 crore. In other words, the cost of managing operations is rising just as rapidly as the income. The committee states that providing better facilities to devotees remains its top priority.
Income of Rs 142 crore in the 2025-26 financial year
According to the temple committee, the total income of the Mahakal temple in the 2025-26 financial year stood at Rs142 crore, marking the highest figure recorded in the last six years. This increase is primarily the result of revenue generated from the growing number of devotees, online donations, special rituals, and other religious activities.
