Singrauli moves closer to taking flight with airport survey underway; technical survey by AAI marks a major step towards transforming energy capital into an aviation hub
Singrauli: Singrauli, renowned as India's 'Energy Capital,' is now close to realizing its long-cherished dream of air connectivity. The process of upgrading the existing airstrip into a full-fledged airport has gained momentum, with a four-member technical team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) commencing a detailed site survey.
The survey, which began on September 3 and runs until September 9, includes an assessment of the 'Obstacle Limitation Surface' (OLS) using satellite-based technology. The team is evaluating the runway, taxiway, parking areas, and proposed expansion zones to determine the technical feasibility of the airport's development. Permanent reference markers are also being installed at key locations along the runway.
Airport project gains political and public support
This latest development follows a meeting in New Delhi where a delegation—led by MLAs Ramniwas Shah and Rajendra Meshram, along with MP Dr. Rajesh Mishra—urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish an airport in Singrauli. Shortly thereafter, Union civil aviation officials and Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced plans to construct the airport in the district.
Additional Collector P.S. Tripathi has been appointed as the nodal officer to coordinate the survey process.
Direct air connectivity could unlock new economic growth opportunities
The proposed airport is expected to significantly boost Singrauli's industrial growth, trade, tourism, employment, and investment. Given its strategic importance in the coal and power sectors, direct air connectivity could open up new avenues for economic development and place the district firmly on India's expanding aviation map. For local residents, this ongoing survey serves as the strongest indication yet that their decades-old aspiration is finally nearing reality.
