Nation Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami 2026 with Grand Festivities; what programs are being organized across the country?
Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Devotees across India are celebrating Shri Krishna Janmashtami today, marking the 5,253rd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. From holy cities of Mathura and Vrindavan to Jagannath Puri and Dwarka, temples are witnessing grand celebrations, rituals steeped in devotion, and throngs of thousands of devotees.
Special Mangala Aarti ceremonies were held at major temples—including the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura, Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka, ISKCON Temple in Delhi, and Govind Dev Ji Temple in Jaipur—drawing large numbers of devotees.
Pilgrims began arriving in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, as early as Thursday night. Officials estimate that approximately 7.5 million devotees might visit Mathura, Vrindavan, and the entire Braj region during the Janmashtami celebrations.
Meanwhile, in Jagannath Puri, Odisha, the main temple will remain closed for five hours to facilitate a unique and sacred ritual. Under this centuries-old tradition, the deity symbolically assumes the role of a mother to give birth to Lord Krishna.
On the eve of Janmashtami, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi sent special gifts for 'Laddu Gopal' to the Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple in Mathura. This heartwarming tradition began in 2024 and has now become an integral part of the celebrations.
In Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, the Sanatan Sabha organized a grand religious procession featuring hundreds of children dressed as Lord Krishna and Radha. The procession also showcased magnificent handmade tableaux prepared by local communities and religious organizations, adding vibrant color and a spirit of devotion to the festivities.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu in her message on the eve of Janmashtami said: -

The sacred festival of Janmashtami inspires us to uphold the spirit of harmony, and devotion to duty and service.
On this auspicious occasion, let us resolve to follow the ideals of Bhagwan Shri Krishna and continue working tirelessly towards building an inclusive and developed India”.
PM Modi extends his greetings
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his greetings to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami.
Sharing a Subhashitam, the Prime Minister expressed his deep reverence for the deity.
