Yogi Government’s PM SHRI scheme: Era of rote learning is over—children in UP will learn through activities and games
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will now emphasize activity-based learning in its primary schools. Children will be encouraged to learn primarily through activities rather than relying on textbooks and rote memorization.
Under the PM SHRI scheme, the government has sanctioned ₹11.37 crore for classes 1 through 5. These funds will be utilized to provide teaching-learning materials, student learning kits, and student diaries. Each child will receive a learning kit containing items such as workbooks, drawing sheets, origami paper, wool, ribbons, and learning dice.
Emphasis on Practical Learning
The initiative aims to make classroom learning more interactive. Teachers will be encouraged to use tools like abacuses for mathematics, maps and globes for geography, and puppets, charts, and other aids for language and other subjects.
The program will also be aligned with the state's 'NIPUN' learning goals. Posters, learning charts, and weekly assessment trackers will help teachers monitor what children have learned and identify areas requiring additional support.
Teachers to Develop New Learning Tools
Teachers will play a pivotal role in this initiative. They have been asked to create teaching-learning materials tailored to their specific subjects and lessons. 'NIPUN TLM (Teaching-Learning Material) Fairs' held at the block level will provide a platform for teachers to showcase innovative teaching models and share useful ideas with other schools.
The government has set a deadline of October 15 for the procurement of necessary materials. It is expected that teachers will prepare and begin using these teaching aids by October 31, by which time the learning kits and student diaries will also have reached the children.
Its implementation will be monitored at the school and block levels, while the Prerna Portal and Vidya Samiksha Kendra will be used for large-scale monitoring. The objective is not merely to provide the material but also to ensure that it is effectively utilized to enhance children's foundational learning skills.
