Haryana crisis: Nayab Singh Saini Govt Loses Majority, What Next?

In a significant blow to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, three Independent MLAs withdrew their support from the Bharatiya Janata Party government on Tuesday. They declared their intention to support the Congress party, thereby diminishing the ruling government to a minority in the state assembly.

The Nayab Singh Saini administration, backed by two other Independent MLAs, now falls two votes short of the required majority in the 90-member Haryana assembly, which currently has a total strength of 88 members.

Elections should be conducted: Hooda

"The government should step down. President's rule should be imposed in the state, and elections should be conducted. This government is against the interests of the people," stated Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is the Leader of the Opposition in Haryana Legislative Assembly.

In the Haryana assembly, the BJP holds 40 seats, the Congress has 30, and the JJP has 10 seats.

Independent MLAs Sombir Sangwan (Dadri), Randhir Singh Gollen (Pundri), and Dharampal Gonder (Nilokheri) announced their decision during a press conference in Rohtak, in the presence of Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state Congress chief Udai Bhan.

Independent MLA Dharampal Gonder who withdrew support stated that the decision was made based on various concerns, including those affecting farmers, inflation, and unemployment.

Some JJP MLAs have hinted at supporting BJP

Recently, some Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) MLAs have hinted at supporting the BJP, even though the JJP withdrew from the coalition government in March.

Meanwhile, JJP leader Digvijay Singh Chautala suggested that Bhupinder Singh Hooda should take steps to "bring down the government that has lost the trust of the people." He also urged Hooda to promptly meet the Governor and inform him of the situation.

The Congress party mentioned in a statement that the three MLAs have already sent letters to the governor, indicating their withdrawal of support from the government.

Saini should submit his resignation: Cong

Udai Bhan, State President of Haryana State unit of  Congress remarked, "The three Independent MLAs have pledged their support to the Congress... Previously, the BJP government had the backing of 10 JJP MLAs and Independents, but the JJP also withdrew its support, and now Independents are also withdrawing.

"The Nayab Singh Saini government is currently a minority administration. Saini should submit his resignation as he no longer has the mandate to remain in office," stated the Congress leader.
