APJ Abdul Kalam Death Anniversary: ​​Know All About 'Missile Man Of India'



Today marks the seventh death anniversary of "Missile Man of India" Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam or Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam is praised for his contribution to the country's space and science projects, while also playing a key role in conducting the 1998 nuclear weapon test.
He is credited with developing the Agni and Prithvi rockets and has inspired generations with his tireless work for the welfare of the country. Born in 1932 to a humble family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1958. He was then inducted into the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1969, where he worked as a project director. for SLV-III, India's first satellite launch vehicle.

After returning to DRDO in 1982, he earned the title of India's Missile Man and created the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). He tried to put India at par with other countries in terms of rocket technology and research.

Apart from being a remarkable scientist, Dr. Kalam also served as the 11th President of India. From being the driving force behind India's rocket development, Dr. Kalam soon became known as the "People's President" for his humility and high-mindedness.

Dr. Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1990, while in 1997 he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. He is the author of several books, including his famous autobiography Wings of Fire and Ignited Minds.

Dr Kalam died in 2015 while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong. The former president collapsed and died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the event.
