"Kanhaiya Lal's assassin, Riyaz Attari is a member of the BJP," Mr Khera tweeted, joining other Congress leaders who had filed similar allegations.

The allegations have disappointed BJP IT cell manager Amit Malviya who dismissed them as "false stories".

"I'm not surprised you are selling #FakeNews. Udaipur assassins are NOT members of the BJP. Their attempt to enter was similar to the LTTE assassination attempt to enter Congress to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi," he wrote on Twitter.

Fashion designer Kanhaiya Lal was killed Tuesday afternoon by two thugs, who posted a shocking video on a criminal website claiming he was guilty of murder, accusing him of insulting the Prophet Mohammed on social media.

The two suspects, Riaz Akhtari and Gos Mohammad, were remanded in custody for 14 days.

At a press conference, Mr Khera quoted photos and posts linking Attari to BJP leaders - Irshad Chainwala and Mohammad Tahir.

"It also emerged from the same disclosure that the main accused Riyaz Attari often participated in the plans of Rajasthan BJP leader and former minister Gulabchand Kataria," he said.

"Not only this, but photos of the main suspects Riyaz Attari who attended BJP's Rajasthan sub-unit meetings are also in front of the ground," Mr Khera said.
