Who Are Pasmanda Muslims And Why BJP Is Focusing On Them?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said this in the BJP National Executive meeting on January 17 that we have to take the policies of the government to the Bohras, Pasmandas and educated people of the Muslim community. We have to connect with all parts of the society and connect them with us.

About 6 months before this, in the BJP National Executive meeting held in Hyderabad on July 3, 2022, PM Modi had announced Sneh Yatra for Pasmanda Muslims. The purpose of this yatra was to reach to every house of Pasmanda Muslims and take initiative to connect them with BJP.

Does BJP need Muslim votes

The question arises whether BJP needs Muslim votes? Who are the Pasmada Muslims whom the BJP is trying to woo? Can Pasmanda Muslims join the BJP camp? The Pasmandas form the overwhelming majority among Indian Muslims, but are hugely underrepresented in jobs, legislatures, and community organizations.

Over 80% Muslims are Pasmandas

Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar Ansari says that the Muslim society is also divided into castes. The Muslim castes which are socially and educationally backward are called Pasmanda Muslims. The population of Pasmanda Muslims is more than 80% among Indian Muslims.
The Uttar Pradesh BJP organized a first-of-its-kind meeting of Pasmanda Muslims in Lucknow on October 16 last year as part of the party's effort to reach out to the non-privileged majority among the Muslims.
BJP is constantly trying to help Pasmanda Muslims. Apart from organizing many programmes for Pasmanda, BJP has also taken out 'Sneh Yatra'.

'BJP should go among Pasmadas with concrete plans'

Experts say that instead of formally taking out 'Sneh Yatra', if BJP goes to Pasmanda with concrete political and economic programmes, it can be beneficial. Till now BJP has been working for Shia and Berelvi votes, but this time BJP has done this big experiment on Sunnis.

BJP won in Muslim-dominated seats in UP

The BJP won the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh with 45% Muslim population by a margin of 42,000 votes. In the Azamgarh by-election, which is considered to be a stronghold of Muslims, after 13 years, the BJP has been able to register victory. BJP state president Swatantra Dev Singh had claimed that the BJP got 8% of Pasmanda's votes in the UP assembly elections.

'BJP gave benefits of schemes'

The national president of 'Pasmanda Muslim Samaj Sangathan', Anis Mansoori, has given an answer to the effect BJP's efforts are having on the Pasmanda Muslims. Anis believes that BSP and SP made big promises for Muslims in UP, but forgot the promises made during the elections. While the BJP government gave benefits of ration, toilets, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ayushman Yojana to everyone irrespective of caste and religion. that is why our people voted for BJP in 2022, he said.
