New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Sunday inaugurated the world's highest Chenab bridge being constructed on the Katra-Srinagar rail line and took a tour of the rail track in a trolley.
Vaishnav said in a press conference after taking stock of the railway track built on the bridge that Vande Bharat train will run on this route and the train will be able to run at a speed of 100 km per hour on the bridge. He said that the operation of Vande Bharat train will be started on the bridge from the initial stage.
Mentioning the specialty of the bridge, he said that this bridge is being constructed by Konkan Railway Corporation and its length is 1315 meters and height is 359 meters from the river bed. The design of the bridge has been prepared in such a way that for the next 120 years, trains can be operated on it at an uninterrupted speed.
Bridge can withstand earthquakes of magnitude 8
He said that the foundation of the bridge is equal to half a football field and considering the area as seismically sensitive, the bridge has been constructed under the supervision of seismologists. The bridge can withstand earthquakes of magnitude eight on the Richter scale and can withstand wind gusts of up to 267 kmph.
Every pillar of bridge is higher than Qutub Minar
This bridge is an engineering marvel. The Union Minister said that every pillar of the bridge is higher than Qutub Minar. 28000 tonnes of steel has been used on the bridge and 600 kilometers of welding work has been done on it. The bridge is so strong that many army tanks can also be driven on it.
Local producers will benefit
The Railway Minister said that after the construction of this bridge, the distance between Srinagar and Katra can be covered in just 3.50 hours. Terminals are being built on the railway route so that local products can be easily transported to the market through rail. Local apple growers, walnut growers and other local producers will be able to directly benefit from this.
Will prove very important in terms of tourism
In response to another question, Vaishnav said that this bridge will prove to be very important in terms of tourism as well. Being the highest bridge in the world, people would like to come to see it, so three places have been identified to attract tourists to see the bridge and they will be developed as tourist places.
