New Delhi: Tripura's famous organic Queen Pineapple was launched at a function in Delhi on Thursday. Do you know why this variety of pineapple so unique and different from others?
Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched the pineapple at a function organized by Tripura Government and State Co-operative Supply and Marketing Federation (SIMFED) at Dilli Haat, INA. Tripura's Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratanlal Nath was also present on the occasion.
Tomar said that a lot of success has been achieved in organic farming in the North Eastern region. Sikkim has been declared as an organic state, while Tripura is also moving on this path, which is commendable.
Tomar said there is considerable development of agriculture in the states of the North Eastern region. The products of this sector have made their mark in the global market and exports are increasing. Even now, there is a lot of potential for the development of agriculture and horticulture in the North Eastern region. Farmers in the Northeast are benefiting through organic farming, he said.
On this occasion, the uniqueness, quality and usefulness of Tripura's organic Queen Pineapple was displayed and a tasting session was also held.
Tripura one of largest pineapple growing states of India
The famed Queen Pineapple, which is also the state fruit of Tripura is a much revered crop of the farmers. Tripura, is one of the largest pineapple growing states of India with commercial scale plantations spread across the state's length and breadth.
Queen pineapples are more petite in size
Few people know there are two types of pineapples: the so-called king and queen. King pineapples are the pineapples we usually think of when they come to mind, while queen pineapples are more petite in size. They're like regular pineapples except for their petite size and sweeter aroma.
They are also more resilient in the face of diseases and adaptable to varying temperatures. On June 7, 2018, then President of India Ram Nath Kovind declared the Queen variety of pineapple as the state fruit of Tripura, citing that this variety connects the state with world trade.
It is harvested from mid-May to mid-July
The fruit of the Queen pineapple variety is golden yellow, spiny, and with a sweet aroma. The best time to harvest these fruits is when their eyes turn yellow. This usually happens from mid-May to mid-July. This is a time when you find a lot of Queen pineapples doing the rounds in the market.
The variety ‘Queen’ is the most popular for fresh consumption and occupies the largest area under cultivation in Tripura.

The queen pineapples are an excellent addition to the diet. A one-cup serving comes with just 75 calories, and comes without any fat, no sodium, and cholesterol.
