Film actor Akshay Kumar announced on Tuesday that he has become an Indian citizen once again.
Akshay Kumar, who has often faced criticism regarding his Canadian citizenship, has shared his citizenship certificate on Twitter.
Akshay Kumar had said in the past that there was a time in the nineties when his career was going through a very bad phase. In that period, his 14 consecutive films had flopped.
Akshay Kumar had said that then the situation became such that he decided to apply for Canadian citizenship.
There was an uproar in 2019 when Akshay didn't cast vote
When he did not participate in the voting in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was an uproar on social media regarding his citizenship.
During an event in the year 2019, Akshay Kumar publicly shared that he has applied for an Indian passport.
Akshay Kumar said that he never thought that he would need any document to prove his Indianness.
Then he said, "After the failure of 14 films, I thought I might have to try something else. A close friend of mine living in Canada asked me to come there. He said we will work together on something."
Akshay thought his career in India was finished
Akshay said further, "He is also Indian and lives there. I took a passport there because I thought my career in India was finished. But then my 15th film became a hit and after that I never looked back. But I never felt that I should change my passport."
But after a dispute over citizenship, he decided to apply for an Indian passport.
I have to show my passport to prove my Indianness
Akshay told in the same event, "I applied for this because I think people have made an issue that I have to show my passport to prove my Indianness. This thing bothers me. That's why I don't want to give chance to anyone. That's why I have applied for Indian passport."
The actor said, "My wife is an Indian citizen and my son is also an Indian. Everyone in my family is an Indian. I pay my taxes here. My life is here but some people want to say something else."
PM Modi gave an interview to Akshay in 2019
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an interview to film actor Akshay Kumar which was released on April 24, 2019. This 67-minute interview was aired on most of the news channels in the country.
This interview trend was in the top trend on social media.
But even at that time questions were raised about Akshay Kumar's citizenship and it was said that PM Modi gave this interview to a Canadian citizen of Indian origin working in Bollywood.
