Athens: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Athens on a one-day visit on Friday morning at around 9 am. He was received by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis at the airport here.
After this, people of Indian origin in Athens welcomed him with beating of drums outside a hotel. The Indian community also presented Modi with a traditional Greek crown called a headdress. During this, slogans of Bharat Mata ki Jai were also raised.
After 40 years, an Indian Prime Minister is visiting Greece. Modi is the second Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi to visit Greece. Indira visited Greece in 1983. Trade, technology, defence cooperation are likely to be discussed between the two countries.
According to media reports, Greece has been showing interest in buying India's BrahMos cruise missile for a long time. A deal can be executed on selling the BrahMos missile, which is called India's Brahmastra, to Greece during PM Modi's visit.
PM Modi will attend a business lunch hosted by the Prime Minister of Greece. He will also meet eminent personalities of Greece. After this he will address people of Indian origin.
12 Indian businessmen have also reached Athens along with PM Modi. He will be introduced to a businessman from Greece.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes at the ‘Tomb of Unknown Soldier’ in Athens. He laid a wreath at the ‘Tomb of Unknown Soldier'. He thereafter, inspected a ceremonial Guard of Honour. He will meet Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
