OpenAI, the organization responsible for ChatGPT, has removed co-founder and CEO Sam Altman from his position. The board's loss of confidence in Altman's abilities led to his resignation, a development disclosed by OpenAI on a Friday.
Following Altman's departure, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati will assume the role of interim CEO. The company intends to conduct a search for a permanent CEO. Additionally, OpenAI President Greg Brockman will step down from the position of Chairman of the Board.
OpenAI, based in San Francisco, is a private research lab dedicated to artificial intelligence development. Established as a non-profit organization in 2015 by Altman, Elon Musk (no longer on OpenAI's board), and others.
Murati constructed a hybrid race-car
34-year-old Murati, a mechanical engineer, hails from Indian parents but was born in Albania and raised in Canada. During her undergraduate years at Dartmouth College, Murati constructed a hybrid race-car and interned at Goldman Sachs.
After playing a significant role in developing Tesla's Model X car during her three-year tenure as a senior product manager, Murati shifted her focus to the field of AI.
Joined OpenAI in 2018
Joining OpenAI in 2018 after her stint at Tesla, she initially served as Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships when the company operated as a non-profit. OpenAI later restructured itself as a for-profit entity to secure funding and develop AI products.
Murati, instrumental in the behind-the-scenes development of groundbreaking products like ChatGPT and DALL-E, assumed the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) last year. In this capacity, he ensured the timely development of various versions of ChatGPT by the engineering team.
Mira has also worked in Leap Motion, a startup company that develops computing systems.
'I am honored and grateful to take on the leadership role'
After becoming the interim CEO of OpenAI, Mira Muratti has written a letter to the company's employees, in which she said that she is honored and grateful to take on the leadership role in the company. Murati has also, in this letter, asked the employees to focus only on their work regarding Altman's sudden departure.
Murati wrote that we are at a critical juncture, when our tools are being used by a large number of people. Also, policy makers are trying to regulate AI. Murati talked about using AI for betterment.
