The Supreme Court has refused to immediately hear an appeal against the decision of the Varanasi District Court to allow worship in the Gyanvapi complex.
Gyanvapi Masjid Committee challenged the decision of the district court before the Registrar of the Supreme Court on Wednesday night itself.
Advocate Fuzail Ahmed Ayyub filed the petition on behalf of the mosque. He demanded restoration of status quo in the campus and sought an immediate hearing.
In this petition, apprehension was expressed that the temple side can offer prayers in the Vyas basement located in the mosque complex only on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
However, the Supreme Court told the petitioners that they can approach the Allahabad High Court.
It was said that the district administration hastily started implementing the decision of the district court at night itself. However, the lower court had given them a week's time to do so.
Meanwhile, the district administration of Varanasi started worship in the Vyas basement located in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex early on Thursday.
Varanasi District Magistrate S Rajalingam gave this information to journalists early on Thursday.
